  • One final postscript to my original tale. This will probably not shock those with greater experience of insurance than I, but anyway.....

    A neighbour of a mate of mine put in an insurance claim for damaged lead flashing that was leaking. He got a quote for repairs of £760. He knew it wasn't really an insurance issue and on making his claim he got a builder friend to do him a quote for £270 on the basis that the insurance company would just give the go ahead and pay that amount without even looking at the damage. This is precisely what happened. So it appears that insurance companies are happily being defrauded for small amounts while genuine claimers are treated like **** if it happens to be a larger amount.
    It's no wonder there's millions of pounds paid out in fradulent claims every year.
    A useful tip though if anyone wants some work done on their house for free.
