daft for forgetting for 8 years!

Options
Hello

I know this sounds mad, but following Martins advice I thought I would sort out my direct debits. I found one that for the life of me, I could not find any information about. in the end I googled the insurance company and phoned them. They then informed me the direct debit was for home insurance on a house that I moved from over 8 years ago. They have changed names twice, I had assumed it was a health insurance or other insurance. question is, am I entitled to a refund? I have been paying insurance on someone elses house for over 8 years. Mail regarding renewal each year, change of name etc, is still being sent to old address ( I had Royal Mail forward all mail for 6 months following our move).

  • Hi there

I think I'm about the only person that could say this to you (because of my name): YOU MUPPET!!!!!

Now on to the serious bit. I think you may be able to argue that you had no insurable interest in the property, making the contract of insurance unlawful (you can't take out a policy to cover you for someone elses misfortune - ie if your previous house had burned down), but your insurers can argue that you should have notified them of the change of address and noticed the money going out of your account some time ago. I think their position is stronger, as they have been providing cover "in good faith".

Can you let us know who the insurer was (at the time and now)? It may help us direct you to someone who can help.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.

  • hi there.

believe it or not - this is quite common.

and yes you will be able to get the money back.

just call them and explain - they may ask for evidence of you moving out of the property so if it was mortgaged - maybe something from the mortgage company or from the new place showing when you moved in.
Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!

thats right really common actually. they'll ask for proof as stated, usually has to be something formal like close of mortgage letter or completion letter from solicitor and they'll refund it back... prob a nice little windfall refund for 8 years!!!
