What % goes towards the actual research?

I would happily give more to charities if I knew how much went into the research etc, rather than employing people to collect the donations!

I am sorry if I sound harsh - I really dont want to. I want someone to say all (OK I dream) your money will be used for the actual people! However, I have heard (- no stats - just a normal person!) that most of the money you give to charities is taken up by costs and very very little goes to the people you want to help.

If you Op, can clarify this you could change my mind and many others.

I do want to help but I want to help the people/animals/search for a cure etc, not employ someone to promote the charity!

This is for me a controversial thread, I am sorry, but I hope that if it does provoke a debate that some good may come out of it.

I also think that the Government should not rely on charity for many things including research and buying medical equipment etc.

Sorry, but if they (who) hope to have a cure within 10-15 years surely this is possible - surely the government would just fund this!!

Or is the who a profit making co? Research baffles me!

This is peoples lives we are talking about - I dont understand why, if they know there is a cure it will take up to 15 years - how many will die in that time??

I don't care who funds it to be honest, as long as someone does as my poor sister aged 21years died of Leukaemia and this time of year is always hard for me without her :(

She battled for 1 year with this terrible cancer and i hope to god they find a cure as i'd hate to think other families are sufferring like we did.

People really do not get charities. First, go to the charity commision and download their accounts to see where they spend their money. All of the information is in the public domain so... *shrugs*

Also, charities have to spend to earn. If it helps, think of it like an investment. You put £1000 into collecting donations. You end up getting £5000 back. Is it a pain in your a**? Maybe. I'd rather have an annoying charity collector than Leukaemia.

I think if people were intentional about their giving, rather than being moved by occasional appeals, and gave a percentage of their income to charities, the country would be a better place- instead charities end up relying on emotional appeals.
But I think the issue here is that this board could be completely filled with people asking for things for charities- I think charity giving is really important, but this is the Grabbit board. Its not being heartless to suggest that its not really a good idea to clog it up with things that belong elsewhere. And I know that by commenting I've put this to the top of the board again...
EDIT- actually that was unfair as it is a sale, when I looked again.

So sorry to hear of your loss Leona. My son is battling this at the moment. If only people knew how gruelling the treatment is with no guarantees.. the months of isolation with only 2 nominated vistors and the constant fear of the slightest infection and all the other stuff, no I wouldn't wish it on another living soul.

Let's hope they do find a cure.

Grateful to the Op for the post, I know it's not a grabbit as such but if it makes someone pause for thought then a lot of good can come of it.

ps- just as easy to just donate if you don't need or want the merchandise.

thanks op for highlighting this....this is one charity close to my heart as i lost my dad 10 years ago to this awful disease (he suffered for years without telling us he was ill as he didnt want to worry us - when he was finally diagnosed there wasnt much they could do).......my dad became a volunteer in the clinical trials which is funded by these charities and they are well worth it because since his trial the medication he was trialing has actually been found to be very helpful.....so, even if no cure is found through donations there is still the scope for advancement by people donating.

    every little helps.....

ive also lost 2 dear friends and watch one of my sons little mates die of this terrible disease so the more money - the more research - the better the treatment....

HLK - hope your son is ok hun - keep positive....xx
