Boxing In Boiler In Bedroom

Options
I've been quoted £560 for someone to build a floor to ceiling cupboard around a combi boiler in the corner of my daughter's bedroom. There will be a couple of shelves and sliding doors.

If decent wood is this a reasonable price?

Can't you get a small flat pack fitted wardrobe and leave the hardboard back off, then attach it to the wall with the boiler hidden inside.

Interesting idea but not really feasible. The house is going to go on the market next year so my thoughts are entirely around which option results in an easier/quicker/better sale. The wrong side of £500 just seemed a little steep.

Our boiler is in the corner of the kitchen.
When we had the new kitchen fitted the boiler was boxed it in at the time, and it couldn't have been more simple.
I've been checking it this morning and all that's been done
We got an extra couple of matching cupboard doors, one the standard size the other a bit bigger the size of the boiler, and a blank end section again to match the kitchen. what the fitter has done joined this end section to the rear wall with a few L brackets, He's then cut four more pieces of blank all a few inches wide, the first he's attached to the wall at the side of the boiler and this gives something for the hinges to go on, the three shorter lengths then go between the side panel and the side wall where the hinges are, they are at the top; bottom; and mid point of the new cupboard. The doors where then fitted and when they are closed , because of these cross pieces below and above them it just looks like part of the kitchen, extra cupboards..
Very simple to do if you can't manage it yourself a kitchen fitter would do it easily, certainly lots less than you've been quoted.
If you're in my part of the world you're welcome to come and see.

A very unspecific question that is not easy to answer.

  • We recently had a floor to ceiling cupboard built around our new boiler and hot water tank. It's a large traditional airing cupboard with several slatted shelves.

Cost was £580 - the job that has been done is excellent and as we didn't have the DIY skills to build such a cupboard ourselves, and didn't want to ask FIL to do it (he's a joiner and does lots of jobs for us but we felt this was too big given his arthritis) we were happy to pay someone who knew what they were doing!

Work took from 9am to 6pm one day, and 9am to 12.30pm the next. Don't know how long he took for lunch though as I wasn't there but the neighbours said he seemed to be there all the time.

Was this a reasonable cost? Well, we were willing to pay it, FIL didn't freak out at the cost when we told him, and it looks the same as you've been quoted for a similar job so ... I'd say yes.

Guess that in the end, as with all these things, it depends on how much you think the jobs worth and whether you can be bothered hunting around for a better price.

what ever you decide , make sure it complies with the manufacturers instructions of the boiler for access / clearances . it could add costs to servicing or repairs if the access has been restricted , and i note you are selling , if its wrong the gas installer may note that of his gas cert which is likely to be handed over to the buyer and this could mean a drop in price

Going to get a second quote in the next couple of days-should give a good idea of where the first one was price-wise.
