PhDs aren't necessarily done at university at all. A few of my friends are doing their PhDs either through their place of work or with a scientific institution such as Cancer Research UK. Though technically they are working full time on their PhD they're not eligible for council tax exemption as neither of these places fall into the 'prescribed place of education' category.0 -
Hi after losing my job, I have started a 3 year PhD and just got a letter from the Council Tax saying that as I am a postgraduate, I am not entitled to Council Tax. Is this correct? It is a full time PhD course.
For posters to help you please post what institution you are doing the PhD at.
I know exactly how to complain about council tax having had problems before but if you don't make it clear what institution you are studying at, then there is no point giving you the information as it may be irrelevant.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

HI - I am registered through the University of Aberdeen but I am with University of the Highlands and Islands Millenium Institute at one of their 13 outlying centres. UHI Millenium doesn't have university status yet so all out degrees are registered through Aberdeen University until this happens.
I live on my own. I am studying a full time three year PhD in Environmental Sciences.0 -
Ask your faculty office for a council tax exemption certificate then hand this to the council.0
