£1,000-plus main dealer bill

  • Take it to a decent independant garage, ask around for recommendations. Kwikfit haven't got the best reputation when it comes to giving unbiased advice.
If you find a good Kwik fit then they are worth their weight in gold. There is a good one in Burnley, they only do the work you need doing and are very professional - and no, I don't work their or have any other involvement with them other than as a customer.

I've used independent garages that charge main dealer prices - but never a second time. I've found a good local garage to me where I go for all servicing and MOT's, they don't do unnecessary work and don't charge the earth for it either. I recently had to take my car to a main dealer as there was a warning light came on that couldn't be diagnosed by the local garage. Probably paid double to get the problem fixed, but needs must sometimes.

Again I disagree with you. If you have a dealer replace a part and that part fails (like in my instance a radiator hose) and leads to consequential loss i.e the engine, you are MUCH more likely to get some help from the manufacturer/dealer than a non OEM part that has failed causing the damage.
I know this because it has happened to me both ways !
I currently own 5 Renault vans (but have many more over the years) and I have had gearboxes & engines (& plenty of other items) replaced FOC outside of the warranty period because I have been a good customer and always used Renault Service & Renault parts.

    It's worked for me.

p.s. but if I had a 4 year old car that i was just about to replace, I'd be looking for the cheapest repairs that I could !!:D :D

You are living on a cloud mate, if VW wont help with the replacement parts on a car that is just out of warranty what chance have you got of getting a replacement engine if the hose or fitting is dodgy? None thats how much

They will do anything and everything to not pay.

And if all those parts failed after 4 years i would be happy to get pattern parts if Genuine VW parts only last that long.

Get pattern parts fitted at a local garage :)

    Hi tom

I'm not living on a cloud, but you may have got the wrong end of the stick from my post.

In the past, I have been very well looked after by Renault when I have suffered failures to my vans and it is prescisely because they have never had anything but Renault parts and Renault service people working on them that I have rec'd the "goodwill" work done free of charge.

My point was that their will be absolutely no "good will" whatsoever from the manufacturer / dealer if you fit a non OEM part that later fails and causes consquential damage.

I have had exchange engines & gearboxes fiited to my out of warranty vehicles free of charge.:D
