cheque from work

I opened my post this morning and payroll have sent me a cheque for £100 and I have no idea why! I am normally paid in to my bank account and it was sent on pay day. There is no letter explaining it just a piece of paper with my name c/o pay roll written on it.

What could it be? Im on maternity leave at the moment.

  • Xmas bonus maybe? Perhaps they told everyone in work about it and as you are on leave, they couldn't tell you. Then the muppet sending the cheque forgot to put something in to say what it was.

Is there any need to call someone a muppet? I certainly would not be calling anyone that if they had just sent me £100!

OP, if you are not expecting the money it looks like you'll need to give them a call on Monday. It could be backpay but that tends to be a random amount, not a nice round amount like £100. Let us know! ;)

would do but since it came from pay roll and she has nothing to do with them I doubt she would know, and since its Saturday I dont think she would appreciate me ringing her at home.

I will ring pay roll on Monday, Im really intrigued as to what it is!

All valid point, my real point was don't stress over something minor that you can sort out by a simple phone call
    Always ask ACAS

Im not stressing really, I just really want to know why they have sent it me and pay roll is the same as my HR department, a nightmare to get talk to anyone they never seem to answer the phone!

I just wish they had put a letter in with it then I would know!

I suggest you write, keeping a copy. More than likely it won't be this, but it seems that many companies are looking for a cheap way to get rid of people and giving you a cheque for £100 may give rise to an irregularity which they would hope to exploit later. But putting something on the record now would forestall that.

I rang pay roll and apparent its holiday pay, because I go back to work on the first day of the new year and I had a few days left over and I cant take them over to the new year so they paid me for them.

You would have thought they could have put a quick note in explaining it!

Well, at least you know you can spend it now. Enjoy. :)
