How to Hide Certain File Types in Windows

I have just bought a Sony laptop. I have downloaded photos and when I view these in their folder for some reason a 'MODD' file has been created alongside it. Not sure for why but think it may be something to do with the Sony software for picture/video management etc

I really don't want to see these files though - just the photos themselves. In Windows, is there anyway I can arrange to hide certain file extensions such as these. I know there are some options for showing/hiding systems files etc but don't know whether you can hide files of any type etc.

The file is associated with video clips, and contains metadata - there is a description here
I don't think you will be able to hide it easily without causing problems for the video file itself.

Strange that these have been created alongside jpg's downloaded from my digital camera rather than a camcorder.
