What would you do if!!!

I had my xmas lunch at yesterday and drank about 12 or 13 Jack Daniels and Cokes from noon till about 9pm.

I walked home feeling completely sober as I'd laid off the drink in the later half of the night out and it was a 2 mile walk home.

At about 1am my girlfriend phoned to say she was stranded in another town about 15 miles away, there were no taxis and the buses and trains had stopped running.

Would you be tempted to drive if you thought there was more chance your mrs would get mugged that you have a bump in your car?

    in a word NO

sorry but that amount of jack daniels needs at least 24 hours to get out of your system and if you walked home you already knew you would have been over the limit..You tell your girlfriend the situation and mabey send a local taxi to go get her or mabey even another friend or relative and you will pay for it.. i would be more worried about killing someone or injuring than having just a bump in your car.. god forbid especially in this weather that you do ever drink that much and go out no matter how sober you think you are. Dont forget the coppers looking for people this time of year so you could just be stopped for a check and lose your licence ( do you need it for work)

  • Possibly seek a new girlfriend who doesn't leave it till 1am before realising she has no way of getting home.

If there are no taxis then the roads must be pretty bad - imagine a drunk driver trying to drive in that!

If the 13 whiskeys were of one measure size, then the OP would have consumed 13 units of alcohol. Most peoples' livers breakdown alcohol at a rate of one unit per hour, therefore someone drinking 13 units in one go at 9pm, would be clear of alcohol at 10am. The units the OP consumed in the afternoon would be "clearing" even as he drank in the early evening, meaning that all alcohol would be out of his system before 10am.

With this in mind, I would still answer his question as NO since, at 1am, he still has alcohol in his system ( perhaps over the legal limit, perhaps not ).

If she was in the kind of place where she might get mugged, why did it take her until 1am, when presumably she had been left alone by the people she was out with, to work out that she didn't have a means of getting home?

However, spending all day drinking JDs and then even contemplating driving later the same day makes me wonder which one of you has the lesser judgement.

If she was able to ring you, why couldn't she ring directory enquiries for a taxi number?

Nope. If she was out with her mates, you stick together. If she can't get home, she crashes at a mates house, not encourage you to try to crash into some poor sod. The very fact you mention you felt sober suggests that in reality, you weren't.

    Hi Kriss,

Its one of them things you can never post on MSE as you will be flamed to death, for even thinking of it.

Hopefully your still around to reply to this, but if you did elect to drive you know the risks.

A picture that always sticks in my mind.

  • Oh my goodness, I've not seen that poster before. I'm vehemently anti drink-driving, but if I wasn't then I think that would change my mind. It should be pinned up on every pub door. What a courageous lady.
