Cancelling Reed's Home Learning College...

I am writing on behalf of my landlord, not sure if this is the right board but worth a shot....
My landlord signed up to Reed's Home Learning College when suffering unemployment to try and bolster his CV. However, after signing up in July, decided the course was not relevant to the jobs he was applying for, and has since gained employment totally unrelated to the course.
He has received the books and materials in order to complete the course, but now has no intention of diong so. Despite this, Reed continue to demand direct debits which will total £1600 when it is finally paid up in July 2011. He has, perhaps foolishly, cancelled his direct debits and has been subsequently threatened with bayliff action.
He has rang and explained his situation, and can not afford to continue the payments. Is there any loopholes or ways of getting out of this, or is he doomed to settle the outstanding debt as he took up the course originally?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Don't worry about the bailiffs, they won't come until the court has told him to pay and he hasn't done it.
He should seek advice, from the CAB, but make sure the person he speaks to is on the ball. A lot of them don't know everything.
Also, don't listen to people who say "He signed the contract, he has to pay". Many contracts are not enforceable.
Search the net for "unfair contracts" for more info. You might like to start here, it will show you that just because you (your landlord) signed a contract it doesn't mean it is enforceable.
