Local town set to take on council to re-open swimming pool

Options
Hi

Don't know if this is the right forum to post this in, but I guess it's right because it will be a charitable thing.....

Our local town are looking to take over the Swimming pool that the council shut a year ago on dubious grounds, and put together a private/community proposal to get the pool re-opened. There is more about it here; www.girvan-pool.co.uk

Just wondering if other MSE members have been involved in other similar activities and how sucessfull it was?

Kind regards
Sandra

I notice you have registered a company to take over the pool. Is this a company limited by guarantee or by shares?
£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths

    Hi.

The company registered (not by me) is limited by guarantee.

    Thanks
    Sandra
  • Look North recently featured an attempt by various community groups in Leeds to bid for an old school building, who were looking to keep the building for community use. It's been a long and complicated campaign, and as I understand it (I'm not directly involved, although have attended a couple of fundraisers the groups have put on), the council have already decided that they want to sell to commercial company who will knock the building down before they develop (student/old peoples residences, shops etc), and no bid of however much will convince them to sell to any group who wish to repair and develop the existing structure, regardless of the fact they pledged to keep the building for community use years ago when they shut the school. It's thought that they have kept the building boarded up and allow it to fall into a bad state of disrepair over the last 5 years to facilitate this.

Might be worth a look into to see what sort of issues may be faced - google Royal Park School, Hyde Park / Leeds.

This is the towns one and only leisure facility. They shut down the activity centre at the same time. There are no swimming facilities at the school. Therefore, if you want to do something healthy, the first thing you need a is 25 mile round trip drive....

    There's logic for you.
