False car insurance claim and loss of NCB

In April someone failed to stop at a t-junction and hit me causing minor damage to both vehicles. I told my insurance company straight away and left them to it, expecting it to get sorted out. They wrote to me a few weeks later and told me that he was disputing liability and that they would follow it up and naively I again left it to my insurers to resolve. I have recently received my renewal quote and my premium has doubled as my insurers tell me that over a thousand pounds has been paid to a third party insurer for repairs to his car. I was, understandably I think, furious. Not only have I lost my NCB, I'm facing a huge hike in my premium. My insurance company are telling me that I need to get my vehicle repaired so that they have a financial liability to chase, however, my excess is £500 so I presume I'd be paying for that as well and none of this can I afford. This can't be on, can it? Does anyone have any advice, thanks.

When the accident was reported you should have been asked if you accepted liability. if you said no the insurers should have investigated the matter and then come back to you with their opinions on liability. Mosts policies in the small print will say that an insurers can deal with a claim as they see fit but its only really used if a policyholder is being really difficult.
It seems strange that your insurers are saying they have paid out but them say you need to get the vehicle repaired if you are to pursue the other party.
The insurers are right tha they will need an outlay if they are to consider making a recovery or take legal action.
You need to find out for sure what has been paid out to the other side and why. If the insurers have paid out without your agreement then you request your NCD back or advise you will go to the ombudsman.0
