brake problem?

got a 55 reg mercedess sprinter petrol/gas big van that i sent for a quick service(oil change , filters, sparks)
when i got it back today, most of the times i did break , it makes a noise and looks like its kicking back the brake pedal.
Spoke to the mechanic, and he said its the ABS...
spoke to my mate and he said the same ... though it never had that.. or is it because too cold today and snow?

no sign of any electrical warning light on dashboard though and it still brakes ok ... never had this problem before

Does it kinda feel like you're braking on gravel? You have to brake pretty hard for ABS to kick in usually (I think). Unless your van is clever and does it for ice and stuff.

ABS kicks in if the wheel is locking for any reason. Been driving on snowy roads perhaps?
What goes around - comes around
  • Not exactly mate, i can feel the car kicking the pedal back slightly and also a noise like .. dont know how to explain..sort of like a power surge just arrived there..

I am not nocivce driver. when i came into a roundabout i hit 35 mph in purpose and i felt the abs.. the van just came together and slowed itself down without any skidding .
it doesnt make the noise like when you breake harsh in a gravel either.. or the noise when you change the pads /discs.

the mechanic is been good as gold before , and fit me in despite he was prety bussy.. cant even blame much since he just done oil and filters, no brake service

it does it even in slow 15 mph..
    thanks for replies

Not really sure then tbh. The gravel thing is just what ABS kicking in feels like to me. Someone more knowledgeable will be along soon.
If you're worried, I noticed ATS are doing free full brake checks atm. They'll take the wheels off and look properly.

    breake (sic) problem?

    No driver problem. ;)

As explained, the vehicle is fitted with ABS which will activate if any tyre loses traction with the road surface during braking. Learn to drive correctly and you won't feel the ABS activating ... because it won't be!

  • i better get the queue to ats tomorrow then ;) wasnt looking to spend on the van now as things are slow but managed to get couple of hundreed just to do the oil and filters as feel sorry for it- been working like a doggy- lots of sand and plaster on its back always ;)
  • No no no Premier.. 15 years on motorbikes and i am used to try to go to work on a motorbike and try brake as little as possible and be a smooth as possible..

I do shout to my wife i see sees red light ahead and still has got her foot from exelerator... dont want her to brake in the last moment and with speed -- and love my van too much to mis treat it .
I hope my van is a clever one and notices that it did snow today ;) just dont see it.
I m like an old man even though just 32 years old.. hear to the engine as i drive and can pick it up straight away if unusual engine noise .
Thanks and will try it tomorrow in a better weather and see

That'll be the ABS kicking in because you're sliding on ice that you've not noticed as a novice driver. And around here up in East Yorks, its so bad that it'll kick in at 15MPH
  • so every body decided i am a novice driver then ;) fair enough lol
