First House - No clue on utilities - Please help!

Hello there,

Basically we have just purchased our first new build house and are on the standard British Gas and Electricity tariff (I'm hyper aware we need to get off this!).

It is a 4 bed, 3 storey terraced house, very well insulated. There will just be the 2 of us in there. I would imagine that the gas heating will just be on first thing in the mornings and for a few hours at night. I work from home a couple of times a week and will have an electric heater for my office.

I would just like to get some advice of a good place to start really. Every energy website asks for current costs / usage but we just have no idea of this at the moment! Can anyone recommend a good tariff for low(ish) users??

Many, Many Thanks

Liz x

if you want to stay with BG, maybe look @ the Websaver 5 which is 6% cheaper than standard taffiff i think

    i like http://www.ukpower.co.uk

just enter rough estimates of Gas 20500 and 3300 Electricity

i have just bought my first property and am planning to go to Websaver 5 tarriff, EDF/Eon were slightly cheaper but from past experience from my parents that were horrendous

Some comparison sites (energyhelpline, uSwitch come to mind) allow comparisons without you knowing your consumption ... but any output will be a guess based on assumptions made.

  • Cons - Thanks you v much that's really helpful!

Mark - Thanks, I tried there first of all. Problem is don't have any values to enter to give any vaguely realistic quote, plus from what I have read on here, sometimes the quotes on there have little or no relation to what you actually end up paying. I will however try again, I was more asking for general advice relevant to the specific situation, but thanks anyway!

The problem is that it takes several weeks to change to another company.

If you switch to BG websaver 5 you can do this immediately and pay cheap prices over the next few weeks, which is the period of heaviest expenditure.(That BG tariff is pretty competitive anyway)

The downside is there is a £60 penalty if you leave before 30 June 2010, but you can sort out the best tariff over the next 6 months if you are moving from BG.

Or simply enter, say 15,000kWh gas and 4000kWh electricity in a comparison website and try permutations on those figures.
