Ensuring my deposit is returned in full

I bought a house and completed on the 27th of November. I currently renting until the 2nd of January 2010. This is fine as it gives me time to do work on my house and slow pace to clean both houses...
I have agreed with the landlord to check out of the property by the 21st of December (he insists that I pay the rent up to the 2nd which I agreed). The landlord himself will be the one that does the checkout.
For the past few weeks, the estate agent has asked me to show prospective tenants around which I have done so and eventually they managed to find one - she is supposed to start renting from the 2nd of January 2010 (the day my tenancy was supposed to end). The flat needs some repainting and the new tenant wants a couple of things done (i.e. new curtain rails etc) which I understand that the landlord will want the work to be done from the 21st of December (when I leave) until the 2nd.
My concern is that I would want to make sure that I get the deposit back in full - providing that I have not damaged the property etc... And that I have cleaned the flat properly.
I am thinking of writing up a letter that from the 21st December to the 2nd of January, any works done on the property I will not be liable for any damages to the property
Any advice would be much appreciated

I assume your deposit is properly protected.
Unless the tenancy is over then it is still your property. Refuse the landlord access to complete any of the works he wants to do unless he agrees to a checkout process when you leave the property, along with *written* confirmation that he accepts the state of the property at that point as being the end of your liability for its condition, because the house will be filled with her workmen for the following weeks.
When you leave, also take photos and print on dated paper to corroborate the state of the place.

Sorry to add that my deposit is protected
I have written a letter to be signed by both of us and dated for the checkout date that he accepts the property as of today and that I am not liable for damages done nor any usage of gas/electricity/council tax/water from the 21st December to the 2nd of January
And will take photos as well with dates on them....
If he disagrees, I'll just keep the keys until the 2nd January
Anything else I have missed?0
