BT cooling off period

Just been on the phone with BT this morning to upgrade my evening and weekend package to anytime package, simply because I make most of my calls during the daytime. However, just over an hour later I was offered such an outstanding deal from Sky that I phoned BT back to cancel the upgrade.

I was told that they now do not offer cooling off periods and you are informed during the call that once the call has finished you will be charged cancellation fees if you change your mind. Therefore, I am now contracted into a further 12 months!!!

I told him to cancel it anyway, because the offer from Sky was that good, and I would be cancelling my contract with them (including line rental). He told me that I would be charged at a rate of £8 per month for 12 months!! I asked about the distance selling regulations and he said they get around this by stressing during the call that cancellation without charges is not available as soon as the call is finished.

But, luckily for me, he was a Scotsman, who loves a bargain and downgraded me back to my original package (evenings and weekends). Even still, I am apparently tied in until May, but that will be charged at a slightly lower rate. I am currently in credit with my bill, and the next payment will go out as usual and it should all but pay off any charges I incur.

Just thought I would let you all know that you have until the end of the call to change your mind if you are upgrading a package, so just might be worth shopping around before you do!

Oh and :T to the BT advisor for sorting the problem for me and for making me laugh!!
