Cancel credit card, lose S75 protection on past purchases?

I purchase high value items, such as washing machines, computers, etc on my credit cards. One such card being my soon to be discontinued Shell Citi Card. I bought a £600 laptop on this card a couple of weeks ago.

As the card will soon be stopping its cashback, I was thinking about cancelling it. This leads me to think about any S75 protection it offered. If I cancel the card do I lose that protection as I'm no longer a customer? Or does closing the account not cancel their legal obligations?

I suppose I could keep the account going, just to protect my past purchases. But I'd rather not have another card in my safe not being used.
