Cheap to run & family car

Hi.

I'm 19 years old and currently have a Peugeot 206 sport. 1.4 55 plate, 40k miles. Its currently costing me £210 a month (was previously 250!) and I have two years no claims.

Me and my girlfriend have moved in with eachother so I am now living in Runcorn but working in Manchester, and it's costing me just over £10 a day to run in petrol, and my car isn't good for getting my girlfriends baby in and out, so ideally I am looking for a 5 door car.

I've been told I can get around £4000-4200 for my car,so my price range is in this area idealy.

I am not clued up on cars whatsoever! I am basically looking for a family 5 door car which is reliable and which is going to cheaper for me to run. I appreciate with the miles I am doing per day but other people I have spoken to who do a sort of similar thing are no where near spending in the region I am on petrol. Plus they have diesel cars which I'm told you get more mileage out of?

I have read on here that the VW Passatt is good but I'm concerned I'm going to get hit with the insurance. But any suggestions will be very much appreciated and I'll start looking & getting quotes.

Your help is very much appreciated! Thanks a lot.

Antony. :)

  • I'd recommend my first car that I drove when I was 22 - very reliable, excellent MPG, roomy and cheap to pick up 2nd hand: skoda octavia.

OK if we're looking to minimise insurance costs and get a 5 door car with enough room for a baby and of course very soon to be a toddler I have something in mind. It's not exactly stylish and exciting but it does tick those boxes for you.
I know this car works because my sister and mother-in-law have one and we have had baby seats, the reverse fitting infant carrier sort, and toddler cars seat in them no problem and the boot space is OK for shopping and pushchairs etc.
    Skoda Fabia 1.2 16v (3 cylinder engine) insurance group 2, official combined 47mpg, 2006 55 plate up to £4200 at a dealer.
    They almost never go wrong.
This is the "good sense" but not exciting choice.

The bigger cars like Passats are going to cost you on insurance, fuel and all the other running costs. VW are not cheap to fix if they go wrong.
I favour a Mazda 6 for cars of this size but I really don't see why you need to go up to a car as big as this. You might just about get an early Mazda 3 for your budget but your up to insurance group 4 minimum.
Also consider Toyota Corrola and Honda Civic in this size. Skoda Octavia is somewhere in between Mazda 3 and Fabia for size but your up to insurance group 5 minimum.

    Hope that helps!

Why not have a look at ford focus or the bigger peugeot, that sort of size car. I think the passat is a big jump up in size that you don't really need.

    Skoda Octavia or Fabia Estate.

    Not glamorous or chique.

But very roomy, build like a brick shithouse with VW diesel engines.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to insurance groups tbh, get actual quotes instead. I'm 18 and drive a 1.3 that's group 7, but it doesn't really cost any more to insure than a 1.0 or something would.
