Barclays overdraft of £22.50

if anyone know any tips, in sumary: no overdraft facility, direct debt came in, owning extra £8.50 now fee is £22.50 for penalty.

Hi, due to stress I have been quiet forgetfull few months ago was even being seen by my GP. thus, last month when i went to withdraw my money from my basic account on Barclays, I explained this to the cashier saying that i did not remember how much i had to leave for my direct debit - I have two, 1 is every 3 months and the other is the new one for TV license.

After checking i left 'enough' money for the account for an emergency (£20) ,last night when i saw my statement i saw it was actually taken by the TV licence fee, meaning that I owned the bank £8.50. I went there to pay first thing in the morning and they say i will receive a letter of £22.50 as a penalty.

I know it was my mistake to trust the cashier, but £22.50 is a lot of money for me. specially when i dont have overdraft facility anyway.
i placed a complaint with the manager at the other branch i went. but is there anything i can do to avoid this. In fairness i dont mind paying an admistrative amount but £22.50...

Dont get it. "my mistake" and "i placed a complaint"

You cant make an complaint because of your mistake lol. If that was the case everyone would get charges waived.

my mistake in the sense that i TRUSTED the cashier to help me in checking the amount of directed debit i had to come throught, so to decide how much money i had to leave behind to pay for it.

I placed a complait for the amount that is too high and because if the cashier accepted to help, why she did not helped in the proper way.

It's not up to the teller to look after your direct debts or what you put in your account. You should know how much you are required to pay.

If this is the first time it has happened and considering the charges are nearly 3x times the amount overdrawn (not saying you had the right to overdraw in the first place) you could request that they be revoked....usually the banks are sympathetic for first timers.

Unfortunately, trying to pass on the blame to the teller will not help!
  • Poor you but don't expect any mercy. My mother is 86 and not very mobile. She gets me to help her transfer money between her bank accounts using the internet. She went overdrawn on her current account by 28.00 pounds for one day because I was not available. She was told she had drawn on her reserve and would be charged a fee of 22.00. She didn't know what the reserve was and we wish to know why, if her current account was overdrawn, they didn't take the money from one of her savings accounts. In other words, at no time did she owe the bank money. They are daylight robbers.
  • I didnt think you could set up direct debits on a basic bank accounts.
Please check you have the correct sort of bank account so it doesnt happen again.

Actually you may have gotten off lightly because if they hadnt made the payment and let you go overdrawn the direct debit would have been refused and that would have cost you even more than £22.50 in bank charges(my bank takes £35 for that situation) and the direct debit would have been requested again after a few days incurring even more charges if you didnt have the account in credit by then.

So check the terms and charges of the account you have and definately check if the unauthorised overdraft charges you have been charged are going to be charged daily or are a one off charge.

I know Lloyds charges daily for an unauthorised overdraft. So does halifax now.

Virtually all basic accounts allow Direct Debits now.

Barclays has a set amount that you can overdrawn called a Personal Reserve. Customers can see the amount online, on their statements etc. For every week that you go in to the Reserve, you incur a £22 fee. It's not a daily fee or a fee per transaction.

If you don't have a Reserve or exceed the Reserve, then it's a fee of £8 for each transaction that the bank pays or returns as unpaid (they will only pay guaranteed transactions, i.e. guaranteed cheques or offline card purchases).

Penalty fees can only be avoided if you are sitting pretty.

Only so much money management you can do.
