Try Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde and Saunton all have a different character and you are sure to find somthing you like. If you like something really quiet try Crow Point which is accessed via a Toll road on Braunton Burrows (Ask for the Tiki Factory and carry on down that road then turn left onto the toll road) No facilities at all so you need to take what you need with you. If you have kids keep a close eye on them, none of these beaches is particularly safe particularly in rough sea conditions.
Try surfing whilst you are there its the best in the South West after Cornwall.
Also the Kids will enjoy the Devon Ice Creams topped off with clotted cream. Have a great time.0 -
Hi thanks for that, will be going with our 3 kids in july, are any of those near ilfracombe at all?

All the above beaches mentioned by the previous poster are within easy driving distance of Ilfracombe.0

There is the Tunnels beach actually in Ilfracombe, although you do have to pay to go in there - entry is through a tunnel in the rock (oddly enough, hence the name!). Otherwise locally the beaches aren't great. Woolacombe is the closest nicest beach in my opinion - I love the beach there (so do my dogs!)! to the far right it's strictly no dogs allowed so it gets quite busy. To the left up to the rock dogs are allowed but on leads, and then at the far left end of the beach it's a dog free for all so depending on your family likes/disliked position yourself appropriately! At the main entrance to the beach (nearest to the right hand side) there are some shops and clean, free toilets (been years since I used a public loo for free!).
We've had two stays in Ilfracombe during the last two years and always have a great time, I hope you do too!0 -

The best beaches in devon are definetly on the north devon coast, I would avoid south devon even though I live there! You can't con an honest man!0

This is probably a 1.5- 2 hour drive from Ilfracombe especially in the summer.
All the beaches I mentioned are probably less than a half hour away to the south. There are some smaller shingle beaches to the North of Ilfracombe at Combe Martin but they don't compare with the beaches to the south.0 -
You can't beach Woolacombe beach. Great for kids. Barricane beach just up the road from Woolacombe used to have loads of shells, but no sand. My son used to love comparing all the different types of shell when he was small. Great if it isn't really a hot beach day as this is a very sheltered spot!0

I've lived in North and South Devon. North Devon gets my vote and, if I were holidaying there, I certainly wouldn't drive down to beaches on the south coast when I had Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde, Saunton and Crow Point on my doorstep!0 -
Definately Woolacoombe for me. We stayed on a calp site at the top end of Ilfracoombe which was great.
The tunnels were ok but no sand ;( , just shingle.
Woolacoombe was lovely last year, we had the weather and spent the week on diff parts of it.
There are also some smaller beaches, almost cove style if you have a drive around. A lovely part of the world and a great holiday to boot.
