Orange Freedom E160e on Ubuntu

I'm trying to sort out a Dell mini 10 for a friend with a Huwai E160e dongle on an Orange Freedom tarrif. The system (Ubuntu 8.10) can detect the dongle and has a number of profiles to load (monthly, PAYG, contract etc.) but none of these seem to work.
Has anyone managed to get one of these working on Ubuntu 8.10? If so (or if not), has anyone got the settings I should be using?
TIA

...on a different deal. It worked fine on my laptop but the software would not work on my Acer Aspire One Netbook as it was Linux based. Called Orange, they advised me they did not support any Linux platforms.
I've now got a Samsung NC-10 netbook that uses "proper" XP and the Orange software installed easily and worked fine. I expect you'll find the same - Linux not supported!

I would try first upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook
(also, when you install it, try not to install over the diagnostic partition like I did!)
Support for 3G dongles was improved in the two versions since 8.10, and according to the Ubuntu wiki, the E160 is supported out of the boxSquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. Ta for that, not sure about updating to 9.10 as it's not my machine (may have to let him get his files off first)Support for 3G dongles was improved in the two versions since 8.10, and according to the Ubuntu wiki, the E160 is supported out of the box
The modem is recognised and it seems to try to call home but I don't know if the right settings are included in the presets.Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though0 -
The E160 isn't supported natively with 8.10.
It does work out of the box with 9.04 and 9.10 though
