Car dealership problem - Car not ready

Hello all,
My wife and I have previosuly had problems with a large dealership chain and swore never to return, but then they go and offer the best deal on a second hand car and back we again.
The deal was good and we thought we'd asked all the right questions. Some minor work was agreed, a collection date set and a deposit paid.
We went to collect the car and the most important job had not been done to a satisfactory level, this has tainted the deal so much that we can't decide wether to push for it to be done or to walk away.
The salesman eventually agreed to get the work done better but only after a lot of effort and discussion. By then we were fuming and wanted our deposit back but were then told that we would have to speak to the manager as it was registered and taxed in my wifes name.
Does anybody know how we stand?
Can a log book have a owner taken off if the sale does not complete?
Can we reject the car if work was not done as agreed?
Are we liable for any cost?
Help?
Thanks in advance.

Hmmm sounds familiar! We had trouble also with a large chain like yourself thought we were asking the correct question. The most important being " is this car pre-registered to yourself" answer "no it will be newly registered to yourself as the first owner". Collected car no reg document. Told it would be sent on! 3-4 weeks pass phone DVLC car is registered to large chain and currently being transferred to us. Phoned salesman, he would sort it please don't tell his boss, he has cancer.........yeah right!!! Week passes DVLC phone us to ask what is going on, we refer them to manager, who says he will give us £500 to keep car. Nope we say we want car reg to us as first owner eventually agreed, go to pick up car, they ask us for cheque to cover mileage. Get knotted we say, refer to finance company who are not happy as they thought car was brand new, both us and them put pressure on large chain who cave in take original car back which by now has 1000 miles on it and 2 previous owners and they give us brand new car. Moral of this is STICK to your guns and get what you pay for, NOT what they want to fob you off with. Nothing can be taken off log book they tried to get DVLC to do this and they said no chance. The victims we know so well
They shine in your eyes
When they kiss and tell
Strange places we never see
But you're always there

no you cant take a name of the log book once its on there, but i wouldnt expect a garage to send off the paperwork for a used vehicle until after you had collected it
you can reject the car, but they dont have to give you the deposit back, if you paid one. also if its on finance, you will have trouble ending the agreement, without having to pay redemption fees
what work hasnt been done as agreed? you say the work needed doing was minor, so how come its now suddenly become a big deal? as most people buying used cars want to take them asap, lots of minor repairs like touching up of chips, replacing a missing key, swapping cd players, etc. arent always done before collection, and result in the odd trip back to the dealership. As long as they have agreed to do the work, then its no real biggie, but i would have expected the salesperson to let you know about it
What costs do you think you could be liable for? once you have paid for the car thats it?!

When we agreed the sale we had a list of points to fix. The main one being the drivers seat belt was to be cleaned as it was very dirty and oil stained. The garage had tried but it was not good enough.
We challenged this and the salesman started by saying it was good enough then eventually agreed to speak to his manager regarding changing the seat belt. After his attitude and our previous bad feelings we decided to try and walk away.
Reasons being that this car was being bought subject to jobs being done and collected at a time/date. The jobs (seat belt) were not done and therefore not ready for collection.
When we stated this and asked for our deposit back he started on the car was now registered in my wifes name and the tax disk had been bought for the car. To stop the deal it would now have to escalate to the branch manager.
I agree they've spent time and money but we went to collect a car that was not as agreed, had trouble/hassle with the salesman and now have an anxoius wait whilst we sort this out.
As above we've had trouble with this chain before and didn't want to drive away a car that we were not happy with or would have to return for work/jobs.0 -
Did you get an agreement in writing on the seatbelt? If so then the dealership doesn't have a leg to stand on.
