How can I get curls to stay in my hair?

I'm going out for a christmas night out tomorrow and I really want curly/wavy hair but whenever I curl my hair, they drop out after about 30 minutes and just look messy! I have very long hair and it's quite thick. It is natually kind of kinked and quite frizzy but I usually straighten it if I'm wearing it down.
Anyone got any product recommendations for holding curls in?

What do you do when you curl your hair normally?Foreign politicians often zing stereotypical tunes, mayday, mayday, Venezuela, neck

I just tried curling it tonight and I put some bedhead curls rock spray on first, then used a curling iron, released the curl and sprayed hairspray on. They looked great initially but are now all gone!0

I have kinked frizzy hair. the john freida stuff is great if you scrunch your hair. VO5 Gel spray used to be really good at holding the curl when I'd used steam rollers. I'm not sure if it is still available.0

i had curls put in my hair for a wedding and the hairdresser used ghd fixation sprays. it worked really well and was still curly in the morning when i woke up0

How do you make your curls? If using a hairdryer have you tried using the cool shot to "set" the curl - sorry not sure how much longer this will make them last but every little helps!I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

I use the GHD sprays too, they came with my kit and I've reordered them about 3 times in 2 years.
Basically it's a 4 step process you follow that keeps them in place.
Another thing I would suggest is while your hair is damp after washing rub in some strong hold mousse, not too much, I use two golf ball size 'balls' and I have shoulder length hair. Then dry your hair, spray some hairspray (I find boots extra strong hairspray beats every other product!) curl your hair then respray.Foreign politicians often zing stereotypical tunes, mayday, mayday, Venezuela, neck

I put mousse on my DD hair before the heated rollers/curling tongs. Then spray with hairspray. Without the mousse it just drops within the hour. When I use the heated rollers I always let them go completely cold before removing.0

Hey,
Have u tried the curlers you can get for perms. run curl defining moose or other product through your hair, add the rollers and go to bed, its better to have a towel or hat on your head, looks silly but wont hurt. take curlers out in morning and tease with a comb to taste. hairspray..
hope that helps .

Thanks for the tips everyone. I think I'll have a trip into town today and get some products to put in my hair before curling as this seems to be the key. I did try using a smaller curling iron last night after the first curls dropped out and they stayed in longer so I think a mousse + hairspray + small iron combo will have to do for now! It's probably going to be snowing and windy tonight anyway so my hair will look like a birds nest whatever I do!0

Tigi curls rock creamy stuff, and let it dry naturally. if you put heat on your hair it will suck all the moisture out and make it go frizzy.0
