Hi,
Could someone please help with how to access the net with this situation. My friend's laptop is apparently infected. He can't go online, and whenever he tries a message pops up asking him to buy a particular anti-virus. How can he by pass this and go online in oreder to download software that can rectify the situation.
Thanks

Hi,
You need more details - what is popping up? What message is it giving? What operating system is it?
Sounds like it's the same thing that my brother keeps getting. As soon as the machine starts, open Task Manager and look for anything that doesn't belong - many times there will be a program that is just random numbers. Kill the process, then that should enable you to access the web and start to solve the problem.

get him to reboot and keep pressing F8 to get into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
Then ~
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the log COMPLETE here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
***If he STILL cant get online he will probably need to bring up TASK MANGER and kill whatever process is stopping him***:idea:0 -
Without giving too much away, does the message mention what the particular antivirus is?
Its unusual that a virus or similar would completely prevent online access, but perhaps the best thing to do would be to get some antivirus/anti spyware programs and download them onto your own pc. Then burn the files to a CD or put them on a USB drive and install them onto your friends laptop and run a couple of scans using them.
They should be able to kill any nasty things causing this issue.0 -
SOunds like either Security Tool or Anti-Virus Pro infections....lots of them around at the moment..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

From the way this post is written, you don't sound overly concerned... "Just stop the process and all's good until the next restart" Hmmm....
I'd advise you actually get rid of it rather than just working round it! Some Malware and viruses can result in you losing a lot of money so it's in your best interest to shift it!Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
This sounds v similar to the problem i'm having with my laptop atm (sorry to hijack the OP)
My sister borrowed my portable hd and her AVS alerted her to the fact that there were some infected files on there (not realising that my AV hadn't been re-installated after the last wipe), downloaded malwarebytes straight away and was informed that there were three files that were a problem these have been removed, and as the above advice i have downloaded hijack - do you mind if i post the log from the scan i have done on my laptop?Using my phone to post - apologies in advance for any typos0 -
sneezy - best start a new thread of your own...it can get a bit confused if different problems are mixed on one thread
