Hot water heated in evening for next morning

I would like people comments on this.

My hot water in the house is heated from the boiler for shower use. No Electri immersion heater.

The timer for HW comes on in the morning at 6.00am for 20 mins.

I was wondering since its cold at 6.00 am and the water in the tank would have got cold from the night, would it be ideal to warm my HW say in the evening at 9.00PM for 20 minutes for the next morning? Esp if CH has been on then the Tank will be warm and water get warm quicker?

Or will the water have gone cold throughout the night?

A modern well lagged(foam insulation) HW tank loses very little heat overnight.

Tanks these days are tested to a standard with water at 65C and losses measured over 24 hours.

Most will lose heat in that period that will take around 2kWh to replace. So overnight your losses will be minimal.

In any case the heat lost from that HW tank is not 'lost' as it heats up the fabric of the house - which is why many tanks are in an airing cupboard.

Your best bet is to experiment.
  • Would you boil the kettle before you went to your bed so that the wter would be hot enough to make tea in the morning when you get up?

  • if the tank is going completly cold overnight then it may not have enough insulation.
i keep all my old decorating covers on top of mine as a sort of hat and i had a spare roll of plasic covered loft insulation,i wrapped this around the tank.
the airing cuboard does not get very warm now.
