  • check the battery on the motherboard is still ok. then bootup the computer and press f8. select safe mode with command prompt. at the prompt type chkdsk /f
this will check your hdd and repair any bad sectors.
if this doesnt work then insert your xp disc and boot from disc. when you get the option press 'r' to repair. at the prompt type fixmbr and when it asks if you're sure type 'y' let it do its job and restart. this should fix any problems with the master boot record

Check the hard drive IDE cable is still plugged in and you havent left a floppy or cd in the drive when turning off.
I had this problem when adding a new DVD Drive and it was because I had not set the jumper switch on the back of the drive to slave,so it and the hard drive were both set as master.

I had the same problem a while back, i had to get an XP install CD (lucky my Pc was bundled with one) and then went into recovery console and typed help then one of the commands like chkdsk or something to check the contents of the disk, and presto it found (almost) everything. still dont know what caused it but at least its ok now!
