Even Asda do a 15/40 for diesels, for around £7ish Where makers call it a DIESEL oil,it'll have additives & detergents, in theory, to lessen smoke & improve emmisions, but you don't NEED to go diesel specific.

Can you use a diesel oil in a petrol car?

You don't *have* to agree to the work.

    As to which oil:
    duckams hypergrade £15
    semi synthetic £20
    fully synthetic £25

I don't think it really matters, I'd go for the cheapest.

I'm sticking with my old garage. £35 with a flush, and I've never had to go back with any problems.

Yeah, I always flush too, but I use proper flushing oil, which can be re used time and again (all the cr4p sinks to the bottom of the container it is in.) I don't use these little 200ml additive flushes, they are not as good. And I keep a spare oil filter just for flushing with....i.e:
drain old oil, remove old filter,
put on flushing filter, put in flushing oil,
drain flushing oil, remove flushing filter,
put on clean new filter, pour in new oil.

It takes a while longer but it's worth it.

I'm not attempting to do an oil and filter change and a flush. Don't really want the responsibility of getting rid of the old oil for a start, and I'm pretty much "anything for an easy life" kinda person ;)

Yes - but there shouldn't be any need to, unless you were really desperate, I'd guess!

Yes, the Havoline diesel oil I sell at work says on the back that it's suitable for petrol, diesel, and LPG vehicles. I wouldn't bother though when the petrol oil is of a similar price.
