I have never seen a flat advertised for lease through an agency in Aberdeen that wasn't for 6 months minimum. For such a short term, I would recommend looking privately either through Gumtree or the Aberdeen Exchange. (Both can be found via Google.)

Your best bet would be to line up some viewings and then go up north for a day or two, checking out the properties. I've seen some dodgy flats in Aberdeen that sound fine on paper, but that really aren't in real life. Definitely make the effort to come up and view. You do not want to spend 3 months in a flat that has damp in every corner and thick black mould around the window frames.

A one bed flat in an ok area will start from £500, but a wee bit more than that would be typical (say, £550). If you see something amazing advertised, it's a scam. If you see something ordinary for much less than that, it's in a rough area or next to Dyce airport. Avoid. When it comes to flat hunting in Aberdeen, the expression "If it's too good to be true..." really holds out.

A flat share will be a lot cheaper and more flexible. Personally, I wouldn't want to share with strangers, but if you're only planning on living up north for 3 months, it might well be your best option. You might be able to find a private landlord, but you certainly won't find an agency willing to lease you a flat for that length of time.

PS Where is your new job? Is it in Aberdeen city centre, or is it far away in Aberdeenshire? Also, will you have a car or not? Parking is difficult in the city centre unless you have an allocated space. If you live in proper shire territory, you may need a car as opposed to relying on public transport. The buses are great in the city centre, but less frequent/reliable the further out you go.
  • If I remember correctly a Scottish "Short Assured Tenancy" (equivalent-ish of an Engerlish AST..) must be for a minimum of 6 months... so you are very-very unlikely to be offedrred a 3-month deal. A Landlord may agree to you going after 3 months with no penalties but that is unlikely to be in writing....

    Cheers!
