percentage rules exist in our area!
One other issue is shaddow on to your area as well as overlooking.0 -
I think that Percentage rules used to be used for the old Permitted Development rules which changed back in October 2008.
There was no rule that said you could never increase a property by more than a certain % - it wouldn't make sense as some buildings could take a great deal of extending before they were overdeveloped.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

The confusion might have arised by the "permitted development" rules, which are that (I think) you can extend by 10% of the building area without planning permission, but no more than once if the building has already been extended using permitted development, even if the total extended area is still less than 10%.0

These apparently are the latest rules for when you DON'T need planning permission. (Updated in Oct 2008)
For a terraced house, the volume of the extension is less than 50m3 or 10 per cent of the volume of the original building, whichever is the greater; with an absolute maximum of 115m3.
Wouldn't the reverse apply for when you DO? ie if it's more than 50cu m or 10% of the volume of the house - which it certainly will be.

I'm pretty sure those percentage rules (for Permitted Development not Planning Permission) don't apply anymore. Go to the 'Interactive House' at www.planningportal.gov.uk which will show you what anyone can build irrespective of planning permission and see how it applies to your neighbours development. But they may be trying to get more volume through planning permission. One of the main things the planners will consider if is if daylight to your windows is significantly reduced by their extension. I would definitely see the Duty Planning Officer in your council and express your concerns.0

I'm still trying to establish whether they are building up to the length of your house or past it? I still don't get this overdevelopment vs. building against your side wall.
Those permitted development rules are old. Look at the Planning Portal for PD rules - they're irrelevant anyway as they are going for Planning Permission.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
