Bathroom refit quote - high?

We've had a quote from a builder who replastered two of our rooms and did a great job for a good price. However his price seems really high? Bathroom is 1.7m wide by 2m, so not huge. Suite items are being replaced in exactly the same position. We're supplying the suite, tiles etc.

We're in surrey just within M25. What are peoples experience? He did tell us you get what you pay for and that his doesn't include any hidden extras.
  • Disconnect and dispose of existing suite
    Hack of existing tiles
  • Adapt existing pipe work to suite new suite and Heated Towel rail (this estimate incudes supply pipework, fittings and wastepipe)
  • Recess sink pipes into the wall
  • Insulate timber stud wall with Rockwool
  • Affix Moisture/soundcheck plasterboard
  • Affix aquapanel to studwork over bath area
  • Repair any defective patches and apply two coats of British Gypsum multi finish, trowelled to a smooth finish to the whole room
  • Supply and fit 3x Chrome Bathroom downlighters c/w firehoods.
  • Supply and fit dimmer switch
  • Full tile area around two sides of the bath. Half tile behind sink and w.c .Half tile area to the right of the w.c (this estimate is for the supply of tile adhesive and grout. Tiles to be supplied by client)
  • Affix 18mm wbp plywood to floor area
  • Fit and connect underfloor heating as supplied by client
  • Tile floor area (this estimate is for the supply of tile adhesive and grout. Tiles to be supplied by client)
  • Fit Bath, Shower, w.c, sink, Shower screen and heated towel rail. (these items to be suppled by client including all appropriate taps, wastes and valves)
  • Fit accessories as supplied by you
  • Adjust door to suit new floor height
  • Remove all associated rubbish and leave premises clean and tidy

Good afternoon: typical Surrey quote for the specification given. Have you had other quotes? Who is actually doing the work, the 'builder' or subcontractors? Is a qualified electrician involved? Ask for references/examples of his bathroom projects as you have only seen his plastering. For other quotes, try the CIPHE. ;)

I'd agree that sounds about right including use of a registered sparks and a proper plasterer. Couple of things I'd do a bit differently but all in all its in the ballpark.

What is your proposed material for tiles as a matter of interest?

Don't forget VAT goes back up to 17.5% in January. It doesn't say if thats VAT inclusive but I suspect it isn't.

    Cheers

  • Hi. I have just finished my friends bathroom while he has been away on holiday. we never negotiated a set price but he said he would pay me £10 per hour until it was finished. I have not taken the piddle and gone slow, but it has worked out that it has taken me nearly 90 hrs to do. I ripped out old suite removed paper from 2 walls boarded and tiled floor approx 7sqm tiled and grouted mosaic wall tiles on 3 walls aprox 11sqm boxed in and tiled pipe for shower built and tiled new step into bathroom. fitted a timber frame to 2 walls length and width of new bath and tiled to make a ledge around bath then fitted new suite. im not a bath fitter by trade but a pretty good diy chap.
do you think it is too expensive to charge 900 for that work? i dont want to rip my friend off but dont want to sell myself short either.

Sheesh thats a difficult one because I'm guessing you won't have my overheads and costs (van, specialist tools, insurance, taxman etc etc etc) all of which have to be accounted for in the charge-out rate.

Only you can make that judgement really.
