BT new line installed

hello all, laugh if you must, because this is gonna be very stupid. I have not had a landline or broadband set up at my place before (first time living by myself... :T). I am getting BT to install a new line and I am just wondering is there different types of socket? Coz all I need the line is for the Internet. Am I rigth to to believe a router uses a normal telephone line to plug into the phone socket?

Thanks

  • Not stupid at all.
Openreach (BT by another name!) will install a linebox (NTE5A) and should install it where you want it ie near your computer.
You then will plug a filter into the linebox and then your router plugs into the filter as does your telephone if needed. The filter(s) will be supplied when your ISP sends you the router.

    Hi ExTra,
The router will plug directly into the master socket via a micro filter. The micro filter will be connected to the master socket and the telephone and the router then connected to the 2 ports on the filter. All very easy. All connection instructions would be included with your broadband package. The types of master socket can differ from house to house. You have said this is a brand new provide but to be honest most master sockets will be one of the type in this diagram

  • Thank you for both your replies. I just thought there are different type of sockets, maybe there was the old days, or my imagination. Just don't want to have the wrong socket installed...

Something slightly off the topic, is there any type of property that openreach would not want to install a line? The reason I asked is because my appointment was supposed to be on Wed, no one turned up and when I called in the evening, the advisor saw a note on the system that doesn't make a lot of sense, it was something like "it is hard to install a line at the above property... we tried calling..." The fact is, no one knocked on my door or called, which the claimed they knocked and called. I was there the entire 6 hours waiting with excitment.... I am just really annoyed that I was supposed to have my BB up and running just before X'mas, but now I have to wait till 30 Dec for openreach to come round again, if they actually will turn up this time. Is there any way I could ensure they will turn up and there will be no complication on installing the line? Coz if there is, I would wanna know now and not waste my time waiting.

    Thanks a lot.

Hard luck ExTra - you are a victim of the Openreach engineer's creative excuses!
I occasionally share a pint with one, he tells me that they often get more work programmed than is possible (not enough allowance for job complexity) so every now and again they knock an appointment off with a made up excuse of "no-one in when called" and don't get disciplined if they don't do it too often.
Last time I waited in all day for an engineer he turned up at 4:55 for an am appointment!!!

    Hi ExTra,

Good to hear you got another appointment booked, I can’t say for sure what’s going on without looking at your account, but I can double-check in my system the date in my system if you want. Just email me your details and MSE username to btcare@bt.com.

    Thanks,

Now, there is a company which cannot face the truth it knows. I wonder what would happen if
    • Engineer said "too much work Programmed"
    • Engineer went to customer's premises and said "sorry, can't do, I have been booked too much work"
It is only if they can do those things without being disciplined that BT will face up to the problem

Note that the socket you see when you click the link above is the old type of socket and not the one you will get. Have a look here and see the NTE5s.

They managed to miss another appointment. They claimed they turned up at 11:45am which was 1hr and 15 mins prior to my appointment time. Screw them. Then they said the dish upstair is blocking their work and they are refusing to use a ladder to go up... All I can say is load of crap. I am just beyond anger. Is there any other way to have a landline installed? I know there isn't, is that why they have got us?

Magically, just over an hour after I called BT, a 3rd engineer turned up to install the line. I wonder if they have called Openreach to quickly send aomeone down after I yelled at them on the phone. The 1st one claimed s/he turned up and called me when outside my door. The 2nd turned up knowing it was way before the appointment time. Now the job is half done, damn the British Winter, it gets dark at 4pm. He will have to come back tomorrow morning to fix the wires on the outside. This chap is a lot more reasonable, he knocked on the door and rang the door bell, I heard both, so it proves if the pervious 2 bothered to actually knock, I would have answered the door. And thsi one is able to use a ladder... Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I was told one would get a 10 pounds conpensation for a missed appointment, how do I go about it?

    Thanks
