Should I check my credit score before I apply for a card (for balance transfer)

I have around £4k on a credit card, I have a £400 overdraft on an account but that account is taken out of the red monthly every time I am paid.
I am looking at finally applying for a 0% card, probably with virgin, and going for a balance transfer from the £4k card which is currently hitting me with 20.9% interest.
One thing I'm wondering is if it's worth checking my credit score before I apply with Virgin, or should I just go ahead and apply?
I've never missed a payment on my credit card, a few late paypal payments coming off my other account took me over my overdraft by about £7 about 3 months ago, but I went down to the bank and got it sorted out the next day without fees being charged.

Ok thanks

Just to clarify - if it all goes through and I need to make a purchase via credit card that would be paid off the month of purchase, should I only make that with the old credit card that the balance is transferred from?
I'm just going off the "never ever ever spend on the card you've balance transferred to" bit on the main page

You've answered your own question there! Any purchases are normally paid after the balance is cleared and accrues interest. And please make sure you set up a DD for at least teh minimum payment so you don't come back and post about losing the 0% deal!!!
