xD Picture Card - 512MB

Not really a problem as such but I'd just like to know why this is:-

Just got myself a 512MB xD 'H' picture card (£21.00 - ebay / £59.99 Jessops :eek: )

The packaging that comes with the xD card says a 512MB xD card will hold 160* pictures using a 6MP camera (Fuji E550)

When I use the xD card my E550 tells me I can fit 280* pictures on @ 6MP.

Anyone know why this is?

Will the E550 let you adjust the JPEG compression level (super fine, fine, or whatever)? It may be that the camera reports the number of pictures at the current setting, and the packaging is referring to the highest quality setting.

Hmmm, a quick check of a review of the E550 seems to indicate that it has a 'Fine' mode and a 'Normal' mode, so perhaps your camera is set to 'Normal'? If so, try setting it to 'Fine' and see if it then says 160 pics.

I have a Fuji F610 6mp - average file size for 'Normal' is 1.4 to 1.6 meg (didn't notice a great difference with Fine, so left it on Normal).

My canon alters the amount of pictures according to the size of each picture, the better the quality piture the lower the number of pics on the card

The numbers on the pack is just a guide.
The number of shots depends on lots of different things:
image size
quality setting
type of compresion jpeg raw
number of colours used, an example if you shoot with the lense cap on you will be able to take about 1000 shots as the images dont use that many colours, if you shoot a sheet say a test card with all the colours shown it will use more.

Just play with your camera settings some modes will only shoot up to a certain resolution or quality setting so try different modes too.

Quite confuzzling!!

My E550 is a 6.3MP camera, but it has the option to make it into a 12MP both Fine and Normal.

Not quite sure how or why you would have a 6.3MP that can do 12MP fine/normal. Is this saying my camera is 6.3MP effective but can make things even bigger using technology?

Still confused about the number of pics I can get on my 512MB card, I know the tables are only a guide and states only a approx number of shots per memory card.

339 Pictures @ 6MP in my Fuji E550 book, but the Fuji xD card packaging says otherwise.

I guess this is ok, and as people have said it all depends on the format (JPEG) and actual picture/colours you have taken.
