Getting off train a stop early

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this (I do intend to ask the train staff myself to confirm- just need to be passing by at a time when people aren't waiting to buy tickets, as I don't want to hold them up).

I commute with Chiltern and will be moving house mid-January. The new house will be closer to the stop further away from the stop I currently catch the train from. I have ordered my monthly ticket for January from the new station, and would like to know whether it's acceptable for me to get off at the stop earlier as before, as it's more convenient for me until I move. The time taken between the two stations is about 5 minutes if that.

Whilst I imagine this might normally be acceptable- as you're not going as far as the stop you've paid for- the new ticket is a pound cheaper than the old one, which might make Chiltern less agreeable to me using my ticket this way. I have done this before using tickets for 'Birmingham Stations' where it covers Birmingham Snow Hill, Moor Street and New Street (so I've got off at any of those) and also Warwick and Leamington stations (but the price is identical). If anyone has had success using a ticket in this way (especially for Chiltern) I'd appreciate hearing it. The station I currently commute from has ticket barriers so I don't want to give it a go and then end up trapped if I don't get a chance to ask anyone.

Also, I am aware I could have bought a few weekly tickets to avoid this dilemma but they are more expensive- and if it comes to the worse I don't mind travelling to the station my ticket is for.

    From http://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/tickets-and-fares/season-tickets/new-customers/

"You can use your Season Ticket at any time and on any day of the week at any station between the points shown on the ticket."

So it sounds like you'll be OK.

It may be that season ticket prices are being reduced in January anyway - I know some ticket prices are but can't remember which.

So your original station may be cheaper still

Thanks both! Very pleased with that info. I had forgotten some fares are coming down too (I bet if mine does it'll probably only be a few pence though :p)

The way the tickets regs are set out, you can break your journey (or even terminate it) as long as you aren't doing so at a station that would normally incur a higher fare. For a season ticket, as Ifc321 says, it's valid for travel anywhere between the two stops it is issued between, so don't panic :)
