Help, Unemployed Medic

I have just got a medecine degree, and due to the shortage of jobs and the large number of graduates I am finding it very difficult to find one.

I have £15,000 of debt, and I have become so desparate that I am looking to travel anywhere for a house officer post.

Travelling costs money, and the banks will not give me any more money.
My parents are separated and going through enough so I dont want to ask them for money.

Would I be entitled to job seekers allowance or beneffits. I am only asking this as a last resort. I feel really bad resorting to this.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry but what a strange post! I find it hard to believe anyone with a degree in Medicine is unable to spell the word, let alone other words such as benefits, or desperate. Nor do you use apostrophes correctly. I'm truly sorry for your plight, but are you for real?

I experienced the same trouble when I left Uni. Not enough graduate jobs for the amount of graduates. There are so many people going to Uni now that it's not uncommon to have a degree these days. You have to have some other experience backing you up too. Maybe you could try one of those jobs abroad in a 3rd world country to gain some experience first.

Have you thought about contacting one of the charities like Oxfam or Christian Aid? What about Medecines Frontieres(sp) ? I would have thought that with your qualifications they would be crying out for your help . The other thought that springs to mind is contacting tutors and see what they would advise , they must see this situation every year and if you dont ask you dont get . Good luck , dont waste your degree .
  • It's unfortunate that when the government spends £250k training someone to become a qualified doctor there are then no vacancies. The NHS now advertises all NHS jobs on it's website including junior house officer posts, and there is probably assistance available through the Junior Doctors Forum/Association (?). Have you tried all routes into a house officers job in the UK?

Why is it unbelievable that someone can have savings of 45k and be an unemployed graduate?

He could have used that money to pay off the debt and been living on the rest of it. Perhaps he is not aware of the benefit system and doesnt realise they frown on someone having such high savings.
