I'm by no means a professional photographer, mainly I'll be using this camera on holidays and at concerts, sporting events etc. I was looking at this camera as a sort of a step up from a normal point and shoot, but not yet quite an dSLR - for what i'll be using it for I don't want to be spending £350 on a camera and then the same on lenses...

based on this, you need something with a fast lens, high low noise equivelent ISO and a decent zoom. You may want to consider a 'prosumer' camera that has easy to reach manual functions but also maintains point and shoot features - a size that is between P&S / SLR but has fixed lens oh and image stabilisation wouldn't go a miss.
example of above would be the finepix 9500, very capable but this is a very big fixed lens camera - there are smaller examples on the market.
I suggested to someone else not to get too excited over pixels 5Mp is about right unless you want to start printing posters!
Most of all, if you want someone to give a specific model then you need to be VERY specific with your needs to narrow the huge choices down out there!

    Hi,
I've got the Fuji finepix 9500 and I love it. Its not a small camera (slightly bigger than the canon 350d but then I don't think that matters much.
I got it because I was looking for an SLR style camera but didn't really want an SLR - too expensive, cost of lenses, changing lenses etc.. The 9500 has a great zoom - 28-300. The 28 is a great wide angle and appealed to me, and the 300 is a good zoom length.
Obviously with any camera like this it has its compromises - you can pay twice as much as the cost of the camera for just a lens on an SLR.
When I was looking last October the 9500 was just what I wanted. 9mp is ott - theres no need for that, but hey.

Anyway, if you want a camera that looks/feels like an SLR give the 9500 a thorough check.

If you are looking at 'superzooms', you might like to consider the Panasonic FZ-7 - 12x zoom with image stabilisation, in a fairly compact package. Or if you are willing to go bigger, the Panasonic FZ-30, again with 12x zoom, but more manual setting possibilities. Both are highly regarded, but as mentioned dpreview.com is a good place to find out more, or steves-digicams.com.

I have very recently purchaed the Canon S3 IS as my first ever digital camera.

I am very happy with it so far - the video feature is especially good.

The superzoom is very impressive too - I live 15 mins from the tall buildings at Canary Wharf and the Canon can take very close up pictures of it from my bedroom window!!

I am not a camera expert - this is my first digital camera. But friends who know more about cameras than me are very impressed by it too.

I bought it cheaper than the high street (rrp ~ £320) - for £290 including a small tripod.

Let me know if you would like more information.
