How to get Home cinema sound on a TV?

I have just bought a home cinema system. I can connect the home cinema system to my CD and DVD player to get cinema sound but I don't know how to get the TV to play cinema sound on its own? My LG LCD TV is connected to a virgin box. Anybody can provide some advice please?

What outputs does your Virgin box have, and what inputs does your surround system have?
  • LG TVs have an optical out. You need to connect that to the amplifier.

LG TVs have an optical out. You need to connect that to the amplifier.

One might as well connect it to the Virgin box. If it's only sending the TV a stereo signal (such as through a scart), then the output from the TV (whether or not it's optical) will be in stereo.

Also, you might get audio sync issues, as the sound would be going from the Virgin box, into the TV, then out of the TV and into the surround system.

Its better to take the most direct route if possible.

Marty's right. Look at the back of the Virgin box and the back of your AV amp. If you've got optical use that, if you've got coaxial use that, and if all you've got is phono (red and white), use that. Basically, do it in exactly the same way as you've already done with your CD/DVD players.

    agree with the others .

you won't your home cinema amp every time you watch TV through the Virgin box , so hook that up to the TV as you have been . however when you do want your amp to output the TV broadcast sound then connect the Virgin box up with a Optical or Coaxial lead . if you want 5.1 a simple phone lead will not suffice instead of a coaxial lead .

unlike the tedious debate about HDMI's all doing the same job you will notice better sound with a better optical or coaxial lead .

these are the optical leads that the real home cinema geeks use . myself included .

i have a Ecosse coaxial ( next one up from this )

I don't want to be "tedious", but how could one optical cable sound different to another?

And the less gullible amongst us would get something like this

Ive seen a blind test run that put up a USB cable against a piece of wire and a bog standard usb cable. Fed into a hifi the people were blind tested. The point was to prove that not all digital cables sound exactly alike. They first put on the basic wire (Keeping the signal as short as possible ~ fewest errors). Then the basic USB cable was inserted in its place. EVERYONE commented how it lost detail.
Then the decent quality USB was tried out. EVERYONE commented that it sounded just like the 1st connection.

What does this mean? Not all digital cables are going to sound the same

Unscientific mumbo-jumbo. Normally used by unscrupulous salesmen in PC World to get you to cough up more cash.

If you want some real advice about digital cables go and do a search on an Audio/Video forum such as AVForums - or if you can do a blind test yourself and then take back the more expensive digital cable.. ;)
