Thinking about buying a 2nd breadmaker--cost effective??

Options
Hi guys, ive read on here about some people who have 2 slow cookers on the go(normally different sizes),but what about 2 breadmaker machines??(again different sizes)--Ive recently bought the kenwood BM450,and i love it,but im struggling to keep a good supply of bread going(dont want to resort back to buying bread),also i work 3 evenings a week til 10pm,and often come home to no bread,i simply set the machine to bake overnight, but i feel with 2 on the go,id get double done/or 2 different types..the 2nd one is a double paddled one,so makes long loaves too,its the Rachel Allen which is now 1/2 price again in Argos at £35.(i had a dodgy one last time it went on sale and had to return it,but im also more experienced now and would like to try it again)(couldnt stretch to another kenwood unfortunately)..plus,id maybe allow my girls to use the 2nd cheaper one(no-one but me is allowed to use my precious kenwood:rotfl:)
Anyway, any thoughts on this,or does anyone use 2 already??
PS,I know people are gonna say bake in the oven, but believe me,my oven is pathetic,it loses more heat than it retains, ive also got rheumatoid arthritis so hands/fingers get painful, breadmaker is very labour saving in this area.:o
This is the 2nd one im thinking of purchasing http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4228022/Trail/searchtext%3EBREADMAKER.htm

PPS,Yes im totaly addicted to buying kitchen gadgets...its "my thing"..my OH is the same with ipods/mp3's :rotfl:

    Hi cooking-mama,

I don't see the point unless you have a very large family who require more than one loaf at a time. Otherwise why not use the same breadmaker to bake two loaves one after another? Bread freezes well so you can bake bread when you have extra time and pop it into the freezer ready to defrost when you need it.

We are a family of five and use one and half loaves over two days. I prefer bread baked in the oven (sometimes using my breadmaker to mix it when I don't have the time or inclination to do it by hand) but I can't get my head around the need for two breadmakers. I have noticed from your posts that you enjoy your gadgets and good for you... if you want/need/can afford them, but if it was me I'd seriously think twice about splashing out on another breadmaker if I had a perfectly good one already. Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

:rotfl:Thought my gadget addiction would be picked up on,thats why i added my "confession"at the end of the original post:rotfl:,
i wouldnt consider the 2nd BM,if it wasnt reduced to 1/2 price,
but do you know what,I never ever thought of freezing BM bread.Duh,I dunno why,cos i used to freeze supermarket bread all the time it just didnt cross my mind to do the same with homemade bread, thanks for that.
PS,were a family of 4 and use 1 loaf per day,the one baked overnight in the morning is usualy finished by late evening--(4 packed lunches and after school snacks or bread with soup and its gone)So i suppose we realy do need 2 loaves a day, possibly using 1.5 daily.

Don't forget if you buy another breadmaker you need the space to store it in your kitchen as well.

I think it is more a matter of planning, rather than buying another breadmaker.

We are a family of 7 and easily get through at least 2 loaves a day (teenagers *sigh!*). I have a Panny and use the quick option, this takes a little under 2 hours.

I make one loaf first thing in the morning, as soon as I get up I put the breadmaker on at the same time as the kettle - I measure out the ingredients the evening before and place the pan in the breadmaker ready. The yeast gets covered by the flour before I put the liquid in, so the yeast doesn't get activated overnight :)

I make another loaf late morning and leave it to cool. Both of these loaves are for 'tomorrow', so every morning I have two loaves ready to go for breakfast and to make lunch - if that makes sense? I also make sure that there are always two loaves in the freezer, so should we go out or if I am unwell and don't feel up to spending time faffing in the kitchen then we can use these. Slice them before you freeze them, then you don't have to worry about making sure there is time to defrost them - you can toast them :)

If you make an extra loaf or two over the weekend then you should be able to have a couple of loaves in hand (either fresh or frozen (or both)) and there shouldn't be any need for another breadmaker.
  • We don't use our BM (am giving it to my mum) but H does a big batch of bread in the oven each Saturday. We then freeze and use as we need.
As the others suggest I think getting organised for more loaves made maybe worth a try before buying another machine.
The storage / worktop space would be an issue for me.

    Good luck x

I have two machines and not a big kitchen :-) I do have a big family, though I find I tend to make bread to give away lol. I had two machines, one died on me, left me with one, missed the second one so much, got another :-) I do use both of them frequently. I do have an appliance obession though lol which I am trying to keep under control :-)
    A work in progress :D
  • Thanks guys, yes organisation probably is the key...but lack of time is a problem,I dont always have time before work to make a 2nd loaf,(days off arent a problem,)but i leave for work at 12md (could get up earlier than 07.30,but working till 10pm means a 07.30 rise is early enough, wouldnt last the shift if i got out of bed earlier, plus im abit of a nighthawk,so dont go to bed till late)which doesnt leave much time to bake a loaf after getting my 2 organised for school etc..were not keen on the rapid loaf as that requires 4tsp yeast---and it tastes "yeasty"...il try baking more on days off then freezing, thanks for the tip on slicing before freezing, wouldnt have thought of that either.
:oI just might still "invest" in the 2nd BM too,it uses cups rather than weights so much easier for my girls...youngest is keen to try the BM,so itl be educational too,how bad am i at trying to justify buying another gadget,.--am i spending £34 i dont need to,or am i saving £40 on a machine that will pay for itself in the long run???...

My breadmaker died of old age and while I saved up for a big fancy new one I started to make bread using the dough hook on my ancient Kenwod Chef to do the kneading. Two years on I still haven't bought a new BM. The Chef can knead up to four standard loaves of dough at a time, then all I do is dump it in the tins, let it proove to a decent size then into the oven for 30 minutes. The rate at which it prooves depends on the temperature. If I make the dough at night and leave it in the kitchen, it's ready to bake first thing. Or I can get it to proove in an hour by placing the tins in the unlit upper oven while I've got something cooking in the lower oven. So you can time this bit to suit yourself.

Hi! It does honestly seem like you want someone to tell you it's ok to buy a second one...... I'm not going to ! Personally I wouldn't . Little bit of organisation and I'm sure you could eliminate the need for a second machine. Plus, the SPACE it takes up. I gave mine to a friends Dad as I make by hand now, and i have SO much room in my cupboard .

Would you really not let your daughters use the kenwood, even if you teach them how? That's quite er protective.:o
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

I use mine to cook a loaf overnight using the timer . I assume that is what you do.
You could quickly load the machine again in the morning and time it to finish when you get home in the evening. If you measure the ingredients out and have them ready on the counter the night before, it would be a quick matter to shake out the finished loaf. Replace the paddle, empty in the already measured out ingredients ,press the menu item and set it to timer.
