I was buying some bits and pieces in Edinburgh yesterday and a lot of even the larger shops had signs saying "returns to be in by 10/01/10.
Can they do that? Its as though they've sneekily reduced the time you get to return an item simply because its xmas? And given that shops are closed over xmas and new year it leaves you any less time?
I have no intension of returning the things I bought but I just wondered if they could really do that.

I would guess that they can, due to the refunding/exchanging of non faulty goods being in addition to your statutory rights and at the stores discretion.0

The signs, one would hope, also say "this does not affect your statutory rights".
If they do affect said rights (such as faulty/misdescribed goods), the shop is breaking the law.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -
If it's not faulty, they don't need to return it at all.
Many stores have similar policies on certain items/at certain times of year.0 -

They can do whatever they please. They could equally put up a sign saying "No returns whatsoever".. or "No returns on Wednesday mornings when the weather is a bit cloudy".
As there is NO legal requirement to accept returns of non-faulty goods.0
