Help Calculating Potential Gas Bill (Please)
I moved into a new house on October 4th of this year, and like a good MSEr have been logging my gas useage. My start gas reading was 7152 [6] - the 6 represents the number in the smaller box (guessing it means point 6), and my reading today is 7300 [5]. The meter states the reading is in cubic feet. I'm with Scottish power and the price per KWH is 5.230. Any ideas what my useage has cost to date?
I've gone through all of the calorific values/volume corrections etc but the maths don't make any sense! If I'm right my bill is going to be horrific!
I've also used http://energylinx.co.uk/gas_meter_conversion_feet.html
but when I enter my readings the price seems ridiculously low.
I feel I have missed something and am going to be paying big time. Any help out there would be appreciated.

I get 4735 kWh at .0523 which gives £247 for 71 days.
that is 67 kWh per day for 71 days.
With my heating and hot water I use about 87 kWh a day so you are using less than me but paying £100 more. Are you sure that .0523p is the correct cost for your gas?
I am only paying .03p per kWh which would cost me £147

Wow!
That is 100 times cheaper than most people - they pay £0.03;)0 -
Hi Robert - thanks for the reply. My calculations come out about the same as yours - scarey! But when I put my useage into http://energylinx.co.uk/gas_meter_conversion_feet.html it comes out very low.
148 units used = 4727 KWH = £174.89pa. This surely can't be right!
Yes the cost per KWH according to my last statement is .0523.
I'm totally confused as to why the two calculations are so different. I'm probably being really dense but the calculator site just says to enter the readings and it does all the other maths for you.
My last house, smaller, averaged about £150 for the 'cold' quarter. The only difference in this house is that the cooking is now done by electric, radiators are better in this house but same number (9), now shower runs via gas heated hot tank rather than electicity. I can't see why my gas would be either a) substantially higher, or b) substantially lower.0 -

then when winter is over look for a new provider.0 -

If you have a cubic feet meter(i.e. an imperial meter) each gas unit is approx 31.5kWh. (it varies according to the calorific value)
So you have used approx 148 x 31.5 = 4,662kWh.
However you have given the price for the Tier 1 gas at 5.230p/kWh. The majority of your gas will be at mich cheaper tier 2 rates of around 3p/kWh
Approx 900kWh will be at Tier 1 rates and the rest at Tier 2. So your bill should be around £1600 -
4,662kWh in 71 days would cost 900/71*5.230p/kWh = 521*5.230 + 4141* 3 = £175
the 2680 tier one units at least that is what Eon have for gas are pro rated that is how there are 521 kWh at 5.230p for 71 days in my calculation.
And yes the gas is very cheap up here in bonnie Scotland.

Cardew - I knew you'd step in - I was about to put in an APB for you! About £160 is about what I'd expect. However when I put these readings into the link I've posted, the calculations are way too low - any reasoning as to why?
Who are energylinx and is their calculator to be trusted (she says hopefully ;-))0 -

Did you actually read post 6 and post 7?0 -

When I put 148 gas units into the link you posted it came to 4,759kWh. That is roughly what I calculated using 31.5kWh per Imperial gas unit.
Not sure I understand the problem??0
