Domain Redirection?

hi, i have paid hosting which includes free subdomains, however one of my sites currently on a sub domain i would like to give a full domain without paying for hosting.

How can i redirect a domain to my sub domain as my hosting company says they cannot do this, however im sure its possible, perhaps with another company? any suggestions?

  • Where did you buy the domain name from for your full domain? Did you get an Admin panel from that company. That should have a redirection option - point it at your sub domain.

    It is called "Website forwarding".

Does your sub domain have any actual web space?

ive got the new domain from the same company that i have my hosting with, but it doesnt have its own control panel.

does the sub domain have its own webspace? im guessing that its sharing the same as my other websites, although i could be wrong. (it doesnt have its own control panel so i'd guess not?)
  • Who is your web host? When you say "free" sub domains, you mean that you get up to so many sub domains with your web hosting should you choose to create them. They will all share your web space. So you're not saving any money in hosting fees. You're already paying for them.

If you have cPanel (Admin Control Panel) with your hosting package for your main domain, you can create sub domains and point them at any domain name you like (different to the main domain name) or simply have them as sub domains of the main domain.

What are you trying to achieve?

with one and one and other web domain sites, there is an option on the same page as dns server settings and on that page you can set up url forwarding

i have unlimited sub domains on streamline.net

i have a sub domain website that i want to give an actual domain. Unfortunetly streamline say they cannot do this.
  • If Streamline say they can't (won't) do it, then change your web host. Find one that will do it. I changed my web host because they kept telling me things weren't possible but technically they were. They're just not offering you a full service. I guess you get what you pay for. Did they explain why they can't do it?

im not going to move hosts because streamline do a great deal (unlimited bandwidth, space 5 mysql databases and their support is really great)

im just thinking that since i already have the .co.uk domain i want to use to forward to the sub domain, could i not get another company to transfer the domain and forward it for me?
  • I'm getting a little confused but think I understand your problem. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    1. You have web hosting with Streamline and have created a sub domain on their server e.g. https://www.mywebsite.co.uk/mysubdomain

    2. You have also bought a second domain name from another company but no web space e.g. https://www.myseconddomain.co.uk

    3. You want to point https://www.myseconddomain.co.uk at https://www.mywebsite.co.uk/mysubdomain and use Streamline's web space?

    4. I refer to my earlier answer. You need to use the "web forwarding" (URL redirection) facility via the control panel where you bought https://www.myseconddomain.co.uk from. Give the full redirection URL e.g. https://www.mywebsite.co.uk/mysubdomain

Streamline can't do this for you as it is out of their control.

yea thats right.... but streamline should be able to do it because https://www.myseconddomain.co.uk is registered through streamline.

Unless its possible to do the redirection with nominet?

Thanks again for all your help :)
