Personally I'd stick to cameras from well known photographic brands e.g. Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Fujifilm or Kodak. The only exception for me would be Panasonic who make some great cameras.

To be honest if all you want is a basic fully automatic point and shoot camera you don't need to spend £100. Remember you also need to budget for a memory card and possibly a case.

WarehouseExpress have a good selection under £100.

The Fuji Finepix A170 they have for £55.99 would probably be fine. My 10 year old has the slightly earlier A150 and finds it easy to use and it produces decent snapshots.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

"point and shoot" a "good picture" and "around £100" are mutually exclusive! You won't get one that does all three, upping your budget by £50 and you'll be nearer.

Personally I'd drop both the Kodak and Hitachi from your list. Stick, as Bill says, to well known camera companies, personally they for me, do not include Kodak as they digital cameras aren't very good. I'd recommend: Canon, Nikon, Panasonic (Lumix range are terrific) and then maybe Pentax and Sony, some people find the Fuji's good, others don't.

Read some reviews and have a look in the camera mags with huge charts at the back in newsagents to help you. The current issue of "What Digital Camera" reviews pretty much all compacts and bridge cameras on the market today, from the lowest to highest budgets.

For the best prices, visit www.camerapricebuster.co.uk before anywhere else.

For £124 (Amazon) you can get the Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS which is a terrific compact camera.
  • For 80 quid, you can get one of these (Nikon S220):

This will be a fine camera and under your budget. Ignore the number of megapixels; it is unimportant in improving photo quality

I would endorse this recommendation. got one about a year ago and very impressed.
  • You will easily get something to fit your remit for under £100. We have an 8 year old 4.2 mp Samsung that I'm still getting good shots on, and one of my favourite shots was taken on macro on my 2mp S.E. camera phone.

Think about the features you need before you choose. Do you want a lithium battery, or something that uses off the shelf batteries? Are you happy to have just a screen, or will a viewfinder be useful? Will you be using it to shoot video at all?

Our eldest has just had her nearly new fuji stolen- we're about to replace it for xmas, but to be honest for all it's bells & whistles, I wasn't impressed at all. Our Samsung was producing better photos.

Read some reviews, and think about the features you'd like. Don't over complicate things for yourself. :)

There are quite a few Canon cameras on Argos for less than £100.

If that's your absolute limit, pick one. :D

Otherwise, follow isofa's advice above and pay £24 more for the Canon IXUS 95 IS.
