Backing up Itunes

Hello all,
This weekend I am giving my laptop a fresh wipe (ie, formatting it) and starting fresh. I am very familiar with the process as I have done it before, but recently I bought an iphone which syncs with itunes. Is there any special backing up etc that I need to do for my iphone/itunes prior to the formatting?
Thanks very much!

Its file then library, then back up to disc. One thing i would do is once backed up deauthorised the computer as windows will give the pc a different name for the pc and you get 5 bits of the apple with I tunes before they will lock you out .0

Thanks for that. When I try and do that, my cd drive opens up and asks me to insert a blank disc. I was hoping to do a backup that produces a file that i can move to an external hard drive.
Just out of interest, I don't want to back up the itunes library/playlists (since all my music is already backed up to external hard drive) and all I want to back up is that itunes recognises my iphone automatically upon connection, the sync settings, my purchases from the app store, etc. So actually, everything APART from the music itself!
Do I still go about this the same way?
