Orange's new £1.50 charge for an itemised bill

I just received my Orange mobile phone bill, with a lovely little notice at the bottom, which basically said: we're not going to give you an itemised bill anymore, unless you pay us £1.50 a month. You can get a summary bill for free if you want, but an itemised bill now costs. You don't have to do anything to keep receiving an itemised bill, but please contact us if you only want a summary bill.

I'm sure lots of people won't realise that they are now paying an extra £1.50 for pleasure of the same bill they have always had. The way Orange have gone about it seems sneaky - it's just a small note on the bottom of the bill that I'm sure a lot of people will miss.

Even though I'm aware of the free summary bill, I feel it is wrong not to provide customers with an itemised bill free of charge. I should be able to check that they're charging me correctly for my calls. They already get my money by DD, and I don't like the idea of just having a summary bill and not being able to see what my charges are for. Surely the cost of billing should be worked into their business plan so that they don't have to charge customers to receive a bill?

A couple of years ago T-mobile did something similar and it turns out the price increase was above the retail price index (or something along those lines) so people could cancel their contracts without penalty.

I wonder if that would apply here?

I'm out of contract at the mo anyway...

How do you find out if the increase is above the retail price index then?

No idea. That's how I found MSE.com all those years ago! Google threw up a link, someone with more knowledge will probably be along soon :)

If they are as useless as o2 then opt out - I did the same, so don't pay the monthly charge (think its £2) but still get itemised bills ;)

I found out about the £1.50 charge on here a while back and once I saw it on my bill I texted them to get it knocked off.

If I remember rightly years ago when I first had a contract phone it was extra for the itemised billing - then it all went included - now its going the other way again!

you can actually log onto the website and check your fully itemised bills free on there - so its not too bad if you've got the internet

I sent a text to tell them to remove itemised billing on my account but they still send them, but I don't pay for them.

What's the text number does anyone know?

I just got a new contract with orange and want to know whether they'll send me bills. With the last one they didn't send me any bills at all.

  • I have been a customer with orange since 1998. I am getting annoyed, am sure there are some people out there who might feel the same that these big companies like orange just change the services just like that.

For example back in 1999/2000 Orange stopped 0800, 0500 from contract paying customers and were going to charge for the calls, while I was half way in the contract.

Then orange decided half way in the contract that they will not be doing free itamised billing anymore, so i oppted for a summary bill. NOW orange are saying that they are not provinding summary bills via the post. The summary bill is only 2 pages and an envelope.

We should complain, who do we complain to.

HOW COME THEY CAN CHANGE THE CONTRACT WHEN, HOW THEY WANT BUT WE CAN NOT AS THEY SAY WE HAVE SIGNED A 12/18 OR A 24 MONTH CONTRACT?
