Anyone else on the old fashioned o2 line advance deals?

Options
I've been on one of the old fashioned line advance deals with o2 since I first got a mobile phone in the mid-nineties.

It's involved paying around 100 pounds a year up front and for that I get a new phone and 12 months line rental.

However, having not had a renewal letter, I decided to call o2 today to find out what was going on.

I was told that they are prepared to honour the line advance deal for 20 pounds (which for 12 months is obviously a steal) but they won't be issuing any phones to people on these contracts. So if you want a new phone you have to come off of the deal and take a month to month deal like everyone else. Which obviously I don't want to do.

The guy admitted to me that customers like me actually cost o2 money and that they're looking to get us off these old contracts.

Anyway, has anyone else had the same issue with them or has anyone managed to negotiate a deal from this position. Got a month or so to decide what i'm going to do so just interested in other peoples experiences.

Cheers,
James

I thought the whole point of an upgrade was that you still keps your old tariff and number, is there really no way you can force them into renewing the contract?

It does sound like a very good deal! I used to have a one2one free evenings and weekends back in the day. :D

There is an old thread all about this deal. I and others have managed to get a new phone from them in the past and still stay on the old tarriff. It seems the only way to do it now is to login to your account on the o2 site and choose upgrade they will text you a code to enter but the only phone they offered me last time I tried a few weeks ago was one I had to pay for. I managed to get a Nokia 6500 slide from them about 18 months ago. This is a link to the old thread.

  • you won't be able to get a new phone on this tariff, the only thing they can offer you is a £100 credit on your acc. You can only get a new handset on an 18/24month contract

  • Agree with the above.

Accepted a £100.00 cashback to bring monthly tariff including same free minutes etc.down to a couple of quid a month.

You could always purchase a new phone yourself, with the extra £80.

Urgh I hated dealing with these tariffs when I worked for O2 - nobody told us about them until customers called about them :(

I've never seen the point in them since you still pay (however little) line rental for next to no allowance (and no doubt 8 times out of 10 get a CSA who's never heard of it when you call to renew it :rotfl:

Excellent appraisal, when I found this thread earlier, these comments got me laughing too, exactly as it has been for years. Good enough though, have not needed to text or surf, just calls.

Anyway as mentioned in thread below, looks like O2 are bringing these to an end now.
