Why a purchase approval charge through play and amazon

Hi,

I just started using a prepaid credit card...thought it would be safer etc and stop me ranking up any debt.

The only reason I mention this is after buying my main purchases I was left with a few quid ....just enough to buy a game from play.com.

All of a sudden I noticed they take £1 out of your acc as something called purchase approval.

The reason I noticed is because this charge meant I couldn't buy the game with the remainder I had on the card.

Luckily I can go and put more money on the card and buy the game but is it common practice for play.com and amazon.co.uk to do this.

Thanks.....I know it's no big deal but still they could mention it somewhere.

PS the walk in the rain to nearest payzone wasn't fun...stupid 3v cc.

Yes it's common, they authorise a small payment on the card when they take the order to verify the card details then debit the actual amount when they're ready to dispatch your order. The small authorisation expires after about a week and is never actually debited from the account (although is ring-fenced during that time so you can't spend it).
