    Hi all,

Thanks for all the help, and giving me both the information and courage to stand up to these guys.

I spoke to them, again on the phone as they do not respond to e-mail, and informed him I would not pay, and as I had not received Appendix A to the RICS and basically their rep had misrepresented their firm, by blantely telling lies I felt under no obligation to pay.
He told me it would go to their legal team and they would persue me for the money, but he was a bit flustered.

I havent heard from them since ???
Is it too early to think I`ve had a lucky escape?

With a bit of luck and I hope so, but maybe don't count your chickens just yet, as it can't be that long since you spoke to them... couple of weeks or so?

It's going to be one of those things where one outcome, the one you want, will never be confirmed. You'll hear from them again in one form or another if they do intend chasing you, but if they're not they're hardly going to bother saying so... and you certainly don't want to ask, which might put the idea back in their heads! It's just going to be a case of the more time goes by hearing nothing, the less likely it becomes. But fingers crossed...

    Hi,
It was the 20th December, when I last spoke to them, so yes not very long ago. I guess it just felt longer!

We use a firm called Coupers Partnership based in Macclesfield. They approached us in a similar sort of way and charge 50% of the business rate saving over 5 years.

They are very good at their job and manage some massive savings. Its great when the council backdate to 2005.

Coupers only charge on a no win no fee basis and I wouldn't pay anybody upfront

Did you ask any other firms for a quote before accepting this one? That's a massive fee basis. Did they approach you as well or did you go to them? At least they aren't as bad as some others I suppose.

    Hi all,
Well I spoke too soon, received a letter from them yesterday.
Basically they say they were in the right, no mention of their rep totally misleading me.

But at the bottom of the letter they`ve put.

Notwithstanding the above, after reading the contents of your letter as a gesture of goodwill we will gladly continue to represent your buisness on a no win no fee basis on the strict understanding that should we reduce the rateable value on your premises our fee £400 + vat would be due immediately. Can you please advice me in writing within the next 14 days if you wish to accept the offer.
I trust this is to your satisfaction and I apologise for any inconvenience this matter may have caused you.

I'm really confused. On your first post you asked if it was scam as you had been approached by this company. People said it was a scam and to avoid, but you went ahead anyway?

    Hmmm, that's a bummer...

So together with the first part which you've only summarised, what do you reckon they're saying overall: they're not going to proceed against you either way? Or the only way they won't proceed is if you take up the 'gesture of goodwill'? Or have they not actually said anything about this, so it's unclear?

I can't advise, I've no experience of this sort of thing (apart from OH getting caught some years ago with similar). Let's see what Ciano and others think, but I wonder if the best course now could be to show the letter to a solicitor? You never know, one strong letter back from him to demonstrate you mean business might be all it takes to get rid and may not cost too much; but there is the risk they wouldn't cave in. It would be interesting to know if they do or ever have gone as far as taking proceedings.

I dont know and I`m unsure of what exactly they are saying, there is no mention of further proceeding or Not.
And this is what I am scared of.

Should I post the rest of the letter on?
I am going to see if I can get a letter from a solicitor, this is good advice thanks.

I`ll also wait for Cianos advice,

    Thanks

Probably me not being very clear.
I had already signed up before I posted on here, but had been misled by the rep - what he said and what then transpired are two totally different things
