Product Recall Help

Last year we bought a travel system from Argos which has recently been subject to a product recall.

Basically I am just looking for a bit of advice.
I rang the number given, first of all they tried to fob me off saying it was the manufacture date they required, even though the website specifically says that it is when the item was purchased, not manufactured.
Eventually they said we were correct and that they would send us out a new car seat if we sent back the original.
Personally I would prefer a refund and to be able to go and buy a car seat that I am confident with.
I purchased the buggy using my argos card, so I have all the details for the proof of purchase etc, but where do I stand on getting a refund?

You have no rights to demand a refund I'm afraid. Argos are fulfilling their legal obligations in providing you with a replacement.0

I think it is totally wrong though that you have to send back the original FIRST, and then a replacement is sent.
What are people supposed to do in the mean time - it is a car seat after all - something used for safety!0 -
I thought there may be special rules for product recalls as the item is unsafe?
It does not fill me with confidence to get a replacement, especially as it is a car seat for a baby.0 -
like most recalls it will be an overzealous overreaction and the seat will be perfectly fine.0

Yes maybe so, but I would rather not take the chance.0 -
Have you spoken to Argos about this yet? Try appealing to their better nature, if they have one.0

I rang them up on the number provided and they didn't want to know at all.
Like I said they first of all asked for the manufacture date and I had to explain to them that the product recall actually requested the purchased date.
They then said if I wanted a refund I would have to speak to the manufacturers.
I may have better luck if I ring the store I got it from, I will give them a ring tonight.0 -
Update:
I went to argos today, I couldn't find the receipt and had to wait for a duplicate statement from my argos card from when I purchased the buggy.
I took the buggy bag and the manager was really helpful, they took the statement and traced the transaction, a year old, and offered me either a replacement or refund.
I was pleasantley surprised and would like to praise the service at Colton Argos Leeds.0
