in Cutting tax
Til November I was working 29 hours, taking home £950 per month (salary of £19,000 pro rata over 29 hours). November, I switched to working 30 hours at £8p/h - I received my tax code on this to be BR (when I started this job, I was still techinically employed by the other job, so had to fill out a P46 and put it as my second job).
A week or so into the second job, I quit the first job, but started working another job (for which I filled out P46 and put it as my second job) - this is £6/ph and I'm doing an average of 7 hours each week.
Now, I will be starting another job at £6p/h and doing an average of 9 hours - so will be working 16 hours with the both jobs, earning an average of £96 p/w - so how does it work on tax codes??
I assume I used my tax free allowance on my first job, but now I no longer have that job, should I call them to get a new number & letter tax code for one of my jobs, or will they both be BR? Also, will they know I quit the first and second job, or should I call them, as all the jobs switched over in very quick succession...and maybe they now think I have 4 jobs?! And most importantly, earning £96 p/w, do I have to pay any tax and NI at all??? Lastly, once it gets to April, will my tax free allowance start again, so I should be taxed less than I will be now?
Confused?! Sorry lol.

You need to decide which is going to be your main job. Ring your tax office, explain about all the jobs and how much you are earning at each and ask HMRC to allocate your allowances in the most advantageous way for you.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

So by "main" job, is that the most hours, or the most money? I'm bank staff at one, so can and will do more hours....but this is term time only, so over the course of a year, it will probably be less money than the other. Shall I wait until I've started the other job in the new year before calling, so as not to confuse issues? As it stands I technically only have one job, and have not received the tax code for that yet, so thinking I'm best off waiting and then calling once I've received the tax code for the current job and the job I start in the new year!?
Pretty annoying that when earning less, you still get the same % of tax taken away from you.....and the more jobs you have, the more they take.0 -
You have a tax allowance of £6475 (for the most people).
If you have 2 jobs, the tax allowance goes onto one job and the other one is permeantly taxed (BR). This stops people having 2 jobs at say £6k, so earning £12k with no tax, than one person on a £12k job paying tax.
If you are on PAYE you will more than likely not have used up your total tax allowance as it is meant to spread out across the year. So if you get paid monthly you actually get a tax allowance of just under £540 (£6475 / 12) per month. This is to spread tax over the year rather than at certain times.
You want your main job can be easier but for calculating final figures its usually best to have your tax code on the job where you earn the most.
At the end of the tax year it would be wise to gather all your P45s and P60s from this tax year and work out how much tax you have paid and how much you should have paid. If you have 2 lower paying jobs, but having one on BR and one on 647L you more than likely will be entitled to a tax refund.0
