Married couple tax

I got married in October, I am 22 and my husband is 24. We both work 40 hours a week on £6.50
My tax code and his tax code is 647L. This has been like this for a while.
Someone at work told me it should have changed because we are married. I didn't know this and I am now confused. I've looked on the internet but can't find anything - only a married couples allowance and one person has to have been born before 1935 - so not us!
Can anyone shed any light on this? Thank you

There is no married couples allowance anymore...only, as you've discovered, for those born before 1935.
So you and your OH tax codes are correct.

Halfpint is correct - the married couples tax allowance was discontinued a long time ago (in the 1980s I think)0

Unfortunately you will have to knock out some brats before the government throw all sorts of taxpayers money at you. Those of us without them get nothing!Life is too short to drink bad wine!0

Assuming they win the election.

Technically, you do already have a married couples' allowance - you have 2 tax free allowances of whatever it is now - so single people pay more tax, if their income is the same as the couples' income.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

Problem is, that takes no account of situations where one side of the couple doesn't work. Our household has a single income from me, a portion of which is taxed at 40%. My OH has no work and gets no benefits so we're a couple who are worse off under the current system.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”
